Foods - About School Meals
California's Universal Free School Meals Program
California is the first state to offer universal free school meals to all public school students. Orinda Union School District offers two free meals (breakfast and lunch) per day to all students.

Meal Program At OUSD
OUSD implemented the statewide universal meal program during the 2022-23 school year. Prior to the universal meal program, OUSD schools did not participate in the federal breakfast and lunch program. Under the universal meal program, OUSD students receive one free breakfast and one free lunch.
The food service will assess and publish the menu monthly.
New School Nutrition Regulations
The USDA regulations based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2012 recommend that school meals be healthier and more nutritious.
Orinda Union School District (OUSD) continues to make similar changes to its menus. Many of OUSD's menu items are now made with healthier ingredients, such as whole grains. OUSD is also reducing sodium and saturated fat in its recipes.
Under the new regulations, students will be offered foods from five food groups (grains, fruits, vegetables, protein, and dairy). They must take at least 3 of the 5 menu items and always take at least half a cup of a fruit or vegetable.
OUSD staff encourages parents to talk to their children about the USDA ChooseMyPlate. This is a visual guide that helps people build healthier meals. Visit the USDA ChooseMyPlate website for more information.
